BAFTA Craft Award 2020
His Dark Materials

Real SFX are truly honoured to announce that we have won a BAFTA Craft Award for our work on series 1 of His Dark Materials in the Special, Visual and Graphic effects category!

It’s the 3rd time our Cardiff based team have won this Internationally recognised award. We are truly delighted to win this year particular at this testing time for the film industry.

We share our award with the incredible crew at FRAMESTORE & PAINTING PRACTICE, and the hugely talented RUSSELL DODGSON.

It has been an absolute pleasure working on this spectacular show for the past 2 series with a fantastic production team. Many thanks to Badwolf, Jane Tranter, Julie Gardener, Dan McCulloch & Laurie Borg, and a special thanks to the creative team Joel Collins and Robin Paiba.

Of course, we also have to congratulate the amazing team at Good Omens, another phenomenal show we were thrilled to be nominated for in this category.

Congratulations to MILK VFX and GARETH SPENSLEY at MOLINARE who we were delighted to share the nomination with for Good Omens. What a tough category with a whole host of ground breaking shows, any of whom would have been a worthy winner!

Doctor Who Series 9

Real SFX were nominated for their special effects work on Doctor Who Series 9 in conjunction with Millennium FX. Other nominees in the category were War and Peace (Jens Doeldissen & Darius Cicenas @ Film Effects) and The Night Manager (Pau Costa Moeller).

This RTS Craft & Design nomination follows a string of award nominations and wins for Real SFX in 2016.

The RTS Craft & Design Awards for 2016 were hosted by Sandi Toksvig on Monday 28th November at the London Hilton. Real SFX would like to congratulate Jens Doeldissen & Darius Cicenas @ Film Effects for winning this award for their great work on War and Peace.

BAFTA Cymru Award 2016
Doctor Who (The Magician’s Apprentice)

Real SFX are honoured to announce that they have won another BAFTA Cymru Award for their work on Doctor Who (The Magician’s Apprentice), in conjunction with Milk VFX.

Danny Hargreaves (Special Effects Supervisor) along with his wife Carmela Carrubba (Company Director) and the Real SFX team, attended the awards on Sunday 2nd of October 2016. This year’s awards took place in St David’s Hall in Cardiff and were hosted by Huw Stephens.

Danny Hargreaves said: “We’re so incredibly happy to have won this award. I’ve been working on the show for the past ten years and am so proud of the success it’s achieved. It’s an honour to collect this award on behalf of my team at Real SFX.”

Other nominations in the Special and Visual Effects and Graphic Identity category included Sherlock’s The Abominable Bride and SFA Y Blynyddoedd Blewog. 

As well as their BAFTA Cymru win, 2016 has seen Real SFX win a Creative Arts Emmy (in conjunction with Milk VFX) for their work on Sherlock’s The Abominable Bride and receive a BAFTA Craft Award nomination for their work on the latest series of Doctor Who. 

This year Real SFX provided a range of physical special effects for productions including Ben Wheatley’s upcoming feature film Free Fire, Amazon Prime’s The Collection, the fourth series of Sherlock, BBC 3’s Doctor Who spin-off Class, the third series of Peaky Blinders and they are currently in production for the newest series of Doctor Who that is set to be released in 2017.

Real SFX would like to congratulate all other nominees and winners at this year’s BAFTA Cymru Awards.

Sherlock, The Abominable Bride

Alongside Milk VFX, Real SFX have won an Emmy in the ‘Outstanding Special Visual Effects in a Supporting Role’ category, for their work on the Sherlock 2015 special, The Abominable Bride. The Creative Arts Emmy Awards honour outstanding artistic and technical achievement in a variety of television program genres, guest performances in weekly series, as well as exceptional work in the animation, reality and documentary categories.

Wales based Real SFX have been providing practical special effects for the TV series Sherlock since it first aired back in 2010.Then returning once again to provide a number of practical special effects for the 2015 special, The Abominable Bride. There were many practical special effects for the episode including explosions, atmospheric effects, bullet hits, shatter glass, water effects and fire effects!

The awards took place in Los Angeles on September 11th, 2016. Danny Hargreaves (Special Effects Supervisor) and his wife Carmela Carrubba (Company Director) attended the awards along with the rest of the Sherlock team. One other Real SFX nominee who was unable to attend the ceremony was Dewi Foulkes (Technician). Other nominees in the category were Hannibal, Better Call Saul, 11.22.63 and the hugely popular The Walking Dead .

Danny Hargreaves said: “We are hugely surprised but utterly thrilled to have won an Emmy for our work on Sherlock. We were up against some hugely talented people who work on very popular programmes, so we’re honoured to have won it. Thanks again to the creative Sherlock production team and of course the the brilliant writing of Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat who continually encourage me to push the the boundaries of what can be done practically.”

Carmela Carrubba said: “We were definitely not expecting to win so we couldn’t believe it when we heard the result. A lot of work goes into filming a programme such as this so it’s great to see our team being recognised for their work.

It was only a few years ago that we hired Dewi as our Special Effects Apprentice and now he’s an Emmy winner! We work closely with Sgil Cymru to bring new talent into this industry and it’s great to see that our apprentices are forging successful careers following their apprenticeship.”

Doctor Who

Alongside Milk VFX & Millennium FX, Real SFX were nominated for a BAFTA Craft Award in the Special, Visual & Graphic Effects category for the third year running. Real SFX were nominated for this award following their work on Doctor Who.

The ceremony was held at The Brewery, London on Sunday 24th April and was hosted for the fifth time by Stephen Mangan. Other nominees in the Special, Visual & Graphic Effects category are: Milk VFX (Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell), Bluebolt (The Last Kingdom) and DNeg TV and Chris Rodgers (Fungus The Bogeyman).

Real SFX would like to congratulate Milk VFX for winning this award for their work on Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell.

Cardiff Life Award 2016
Creative Category

Real SFX won a Cardiff Life Award for the second year in a row! The Cardiff Life Awards are the business highlight of the city. They are the most prestigious, most tightly contested Awards with the greatest number of local companies involved. Winning a Cardiff Life Award is a powerful accolade.

Real SFX battled it out in the Creative category with the other seven nominees Brightest Films, Design Management Partnership, Peaceful Progress, Design Dough, The Printhaus, Candy Jar Books and Wonder. The awards ceremony took place in Cardiff City Hall on 17th March 2016. Real SFX would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all nominees and winners at the 2016 Cardiff Life Awards.

QSA Apprenticeship Award 2016
Small Employer of the Year

On Thursday, 10th of March 2016 the annual Quality Skills Alliance awards ceremony was held at the Cardiff & Vale College Cardiff city centre campus.

Real SFX won ‘Small Employer of the Year’ at the 2016 QSA Awards. This is the second consecutive year that Real SFX have had success at the QSA Awards. The previous year’s awards saw former special effects apprentice, Dai Kneath win in the ‘Creative Industries Apprentice of the Year’ category.

The Quality Skills Alliance is a consortium of work-based learning providers made up of 24 partners and subcontractors. The awards celebrate excellence and achievement, and the winners were chosen by a panel comprising the QSA’s chair and representatives from the Confederation of British Industry and the Welsh Government’s Department for Education and Skills.

Real SFX were nominated for this award by Sgil Cymru, who are a training provider for the creative industries. Carmela Carrubba, Creative Director at Real SFX said: “Thank you to my team of apprentices and team. A special thank you to Sue Jeffries, Nadine, Matt and Catrin for starting up Sgil Cymru after Cyfle went last year. Without individuals like Sue and Nadine with passion and drive in training, we would not be able to continue bringing new talented people into the creative industries via apprenticeships. Thank you to Andrew Cardiff and Vale College for supporting the apprentices this year and acting fast to save this year’s course. It is important that we all continue working together, giving these young people opportunity to learn a skill in the workplace. Congratulations to BBC Wales last night who we’ve been working closely with for years, Creative Skillset and all the winners tonight for all your achievements. A final thank you to the QSA and staff here this evening for amazing evening in this great facility.”

A Poet in New York

Real SFX, along with Bait studios, were honoured with a second consecutive BAFTA Cymru Award for A Poet in New York in the Special and Visual Effects Category.

The 2015 BAFTA Cymru Awards were held on Sunday 27th September at St David’s Hall in Cardiff and celebrated the very best Welsh talent of the year.

Real SFX are thrilled to have won a Cardiff Life Award for the Creative category – we were named the best creative company in the City of Cardiff.

Nominations are whittled down to finalists – Real SFX being on of them! The judges then meet to decide who the winners are guided by nominations, plus any supporting material and indications of a business’ success in 2014. The finalists were unveiled on 27th January and Real SFX were thrilled to be named as one of them.

The winners were revealed at the Cardiff Life Awards on March 19th 2015 in a ceremony held at Cardiff City Hall. The ceremony was attended by Danny Hargreaves & Carmela Carrubba, Real SFX company directors, as well as some of our SFX crew.
