"The exclusive window installations designed by Rick Owens for Selfridges were ambitious, provocative and challenging. Each display required live action special effects elements, which would test the versatility of the spaces themselves, and the mettle of our installation team. Real SFX were already on our radar as a team of experts practicing some spectacular effects works. They embraced the challenging brief with flair and enthusiasm, devising a series of solutions which were practical and sustainable over the seven weeks the windows were installed. The completed works were visually arresting, and truly extraordinary"
James Barnett, Selfridges Windows Production Manager
For the first window we designed and created the high gloss black steps that lead to ‘nowhere’ and installed a smoke rig, which would create a cascading effect of artificial smoke down the steps.
The second window housed a continuous flow of 'black vomit' from the mouth of a woman with glowing eyes. We used a fluid tank and pump system for this rig to pump black fluid through the mouth of the pre-built head. Both windows heavily feature one of Owen's most constant sources of inspiration; Richard Strauss' opera 'Salome'.
Both windows were installed during the night as we couldn't go in while the store was open. This represented a challenge as we were working in very tight spaces moving in to and out of the windows and in the dark as all installations happened at night.
The World of Rick Owens at Selfridges ran for 7 weeks, closing on October 24th. The unique experience celebrated the designer's cutting-edge approach to fashion.
